Privacy

UltraVPN is owned by Network Protect Limited—a UK and US incorporated company. Sadly, considering its double-country jurisdiction, UltraVPN enjoys limited data protection because both the US and UK are known to have obligatory data retention laws. However, according to UltraVPN, they don’t store any user information and observe a strict no-logs policy. Nonetheless, UltraVPN still shares some VPN-attributed data with trusted third parties—but this doesn’t exactly guarantee total security. While the company has previously stated that it doesn’t “keep tabs” on its users online activity, we were not able to find a detailed explanation of the current logging policy in the company’s current Terms of Service and End User License Agreement.

For that reason, for a user intent on finding a true zero-logs provider, there may be better options on the market.

Regarding connection security, UltraVPN uses best-in-class encryption techniques. All customer connections are secured with 256 bit encryption and the technology used is based on the OpenVPN protocol. According to them, UltraVPN’s encryption is virtually uncrackable—giving peace of mind when surfing the internet.

Features

  • UltraVPN offers the following features through all its servers:

    High speed connection:

UltraVPN specializes in providing a high-speed connection without bandwidth caps or throttling.

    One-click firewall toggle:

If users want to use the built-in wireless, which applies some filtering rules to connections, they can simply toggle this on and off by using the draggable slider. Users are also able to toggle the connection protocol between UDP and TCP as well as select the outgoing port for connections.

The Speed Test

We evaluated the speed of UltraVPN by connecting through 2 servers: one in Paris, France and the other in Vancouver / Canada West. There was an approximately 25% slowdown in the downlink when using both servers, but this was not bad enough to impair the quality of the movie we were trying to stream during the test.

Pricing and Deals

UltraVPN is currently available at the following discounted rates.

Subscription Period 1 month 6 month 12 months / 1 year
Price $7.99/month $5.99/month $3.75/month
Saving 20% 40% 50%

Clearly, the best way to lock in maximum value is to go with the yearly subscription option. Although UltraVPN does not wow on the features’ front, when users subscribe for a year, it does represent reasonably good value considering the fast nature of its server network.

Torrents

UltraVPN is known to allow torrenting and peer to peer (P2P) connections. Users can use a popular client like Bittorrent to share large files with other users around the world.

Netflix

UltraVPN is enabled to unblock Netflix. More than 50 of the company’s network of about 120 servers are located in North America, and users should be able to choose between one of the options. UltraVPN has placed heavy emphasis in its marketing materials on the fact that its technology can allow streaming multimedia services, so we would be very surprised if the company fell afoul of Netflix’s anti-VPN measures.

Client Setup

We were able to set up the Windows client in a number of minutes without difficulty. After downloading the installation file, all it took was a couple of clicks to get the program up and running. Installing the Chrome App was also easy. Users can just search for, and install, the app directly from the Chrome Web Store.

Apps

UltraVPN has apps for Android and iOS. They are available from Google Play and iTunes respectively, so users do not need to allow unsecure sources to begin using them. Like the Windows tool, the Android app features a basic but attractive design, with a large “power” button on the home screen showing the connection status. Users can similarly choose between one of the connection options and toggle the connection port.

Customer Support

Although UltraVPN does provide customer support, we found the resources a little harder to access than other providers (typing ‘UltraVPN support’ into Google, for instance, didn’t instantly call up a helpdesk). However, the company does provide billing support through email, live chat, and by phone.

It’s noteworthy that UltraVPN has a 24/7 live chat service that we were delighted with. The platform is run by actual humans, and they’re knowledgeable enough to solve your issues.

For live chat support, we were connected instantly to a very helpful representative that was able to answer our question about which server to use for a certain use-case. The phone support is available through 5 international numbers, including a line in Australia. When selecting email support, users can quickly label whether their query pertains to technical matters or billing. A form populates and upon completion triggers a ticket.

There’s also a support URL which contains 2 articles in the technical selection about how to install the program on Mac and Windows. This is definitely not as comprehensive as some alternative providers, but should be enough to at least get users up and running.

Ease Of Use

UltraVPN is a basic platform. Users simply have to select the connection server in order to initiate a connection. While this won’t suit more advanced users that want, for instance, to use a certain connection protocol, for a beginner VPN user it is an easy system to set up and begin using.

Bottom line

If you’re looking for a basic VPN provider with relatively fast servers, UltraVPN is a good bet. More advanced users will not find the options “under the hood” sufficient, but we were able to get good connection speeds from server locations in Canada and France.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. All connections take place via OpenVPN.

At the time of writing, the US servers do work to allow access to Netflix.
